It was a packed house with a crowd for our highly anticipated performance. The energy was potent at Bryan Rabin and Adam XII Present: Giorgio’s A Modern Discotheque on the Sunset Strip it caused first ever power outage as we were about to take the stage for our mini performance. Shalamar ® celebrated the debut single release “SlowDance.” Not to be cliche’ but it was truly a night to remember with new members Nate Allen Smith, Rosero McCoy and everyone who came out to party and celebrate with us,

GRAMMY WINNER JODY WATLEY & SHALAMAR ‘RELOADED’ CELEBRATE NEW SINGLE AT GIORGIO’S, IN THE STANDARD, HOLLYWOOD

 

On Saturday, July 18th, the most infamous disco dance party in Los Angeles, Giorgio’s housed at the Standard, Hollywood hosted an once in a lifetime performance by Grammy-winning multi-platinum singer, songwriter, producer, and entrepreneur Jody Watley. Watley, one of Pop/R&B and dance music’s most enduring and stylish trailblazers, returned with the newly Reloaded Shalamar ® that features Nate Allen Smith and Rosero McCoy which released on 7.17.15. The performance served as the launch for the newly Reloaded Shalamar ® and the release of their sexy new single “SlowDance” that has been celebrated worldwide in all digital outlets through Watley’s longtime imprint Avitone Recordings. This is the first single for the modern trio and the first official single release for Shalamar ® since 1990 in it’s earlier recording history.

 

Disco lovers were in awe as Watley commanded the stage. The jaw dropping performance proved Watley has not missed a beat since Shalamar’s ® last release as the crowd danced the night away in awe of the amazing performance they were able to witness. Always fashion forward Watley was wearing a black sequence Chanel coast while LA’s fashion set was out in full force such as designer Michael Schmidt, shoe designer Jerome C. Rousseau (named a shoe in his last season collection called “The Watley”), John Eshaya (JET) Marcy Medina (WWD), celebrity make-up Kathy Jeung, and celebrity hair stylist Peter Savic. Some other attending notables included: celebrity photographer Greg Gorman, actress Tisha Campbell, comedian Craig Robinson (The Office), famed hollywood interior Designer Cliff Fong, Billy Woodruff (Director), and Ed Patuto (Broad Museum).

I could have taken an obvious approach to release a dance single for the new Shalamar® – however it’s not in my nature to play it safe. Despite soul music being less than commercial  – authentically it felt important to take the path less traveled..as always. I’d sent the track to Ty to mix and he dug it so much – he wanted to put his spin on it.

Shalamar “SlowDance” given a new twist courtesy of Ty Macklin who has worked with India Arie, Erykah Badu to name two awesome talents.

While other people run their mouths..run your business..I always think of that quote. The road less traveled..

Life isn’t meant to be lived by committee. The journey of life and business has many twists, turns and lessons – stay open on the path is what I always believe. Listen to the universe, follow your instincts. Sometimes opportunities and new beginnings come in unexpected ways…especially ones we may not be looking for. For me..this began when others were misappropriating my image and  likeness to their gain, while seeking to mislead – however it’s clear the universe had it’s own plans. Being a business woman simply trying to protect myself from those seeking to damage, mislead and even bizarrely – erase and diminish — creating this cause and effect. But it’s obvious – this is all intended.

There is one Shalamar of today, not decades ago — this era with a legally registered trademark, of which I am the owner and we are it like it or not – believe that; Jody Watley, Nate Allen Smith and Rosero McCoy. Despite efforts by a few to try undermine, sabotage, intimidate, and slander my name  – we will continue to work hard and remain humble – creating a quality new foundation as we have begun in music, live entertainment, dance and style. That is something always associated with me. The past will always be there to look back on..just don’t get stuck there as life and business continue to move on.

That we caught the attention of Spectra with our efforts, I see as another blessing – a gift that was meant to be..the universe is always evolving and speaking if we are paying attention.

Directed by Damien Sandoval, who believed so much in this song and us –  wanting to give it the video it deserved with aerials by Garrett Backstrom is also so special. His agent Martin Davis who was so diligent over the years in wanting to connect me with one of his directors because he believed and has such respect for what I’ve done and doing. Everyone on this project, hair and makeup Tre Major who’s wanted to work with me for decades..Jessie J Collections who helped styled the guys..there’s a passion, unity and organic authenticity that’s all through this video. As the legal registered trademark owner of the Shalamar® mark, it’s exciting for me not just an an artist but as a business woman to be able to take control of this brand and not just pimp it for what it meant in the past..and who’s pockets could be lined doing a show here and there in the UK — using false and misleading ads with my likeness with potential damage to a reputation I worked hard – and continue – to build. A part of my past history and legacy..bringing it into the now after it was abandoned since 1990. No new music, no media or press interest – nothing, until my registration and vision – now others scramble and continue to ignore and remain locked in some bizarre purgatory of decades gone by. The Roxy holds a special place in the past lore of Shalamar, as one of the first performances we did with Gerald Brown (original). There was a fistfight that night — I’ll have to save that tidbit for my memoir. I first saw Prince make his debut here — this means so much. Special thank you to my friend Bryan Rabin for steering me in the right direction to make this happen.
